The police walked into the house carrying bundles that Alex couldn't quite make out from his distance. Sophie just stood in the alleyway, patting down her electrified hair. 'Alex, why did you get the metal command from Dad but I get the creepy eye thing from Mum? It's not fair.'
'I missed you saying that-you've said it ever since we found out about them.' He replied with a laugh.
'But all I can do is see through walls, and see what's really there.' She complained.
'Yeah, but you have the hair. I would give anything to have controllable, electric hair.' He smirked.
'Really?'
'No, it's a pretty shit power, but it's better than nothing.'
'I really, really, hate you.' She said, and got back to work on her hair.
They sat in silence for a minute, watching the police. Then Sophie asked 'Where will we go once we see the police leaving the house?'
'To the safe house. You know the one, in the valley over that ridge?' He pointed to a line of trees in the distance, only just visible in the dark. 'That's where everyone else is. We save them and give them a choice-join us or find a new town and settle down. Most leave, but around 10 have stayed. We need just 1 more, and that's where you come in, Sophie.'
'Ummmmm, what do you need me for?" she asked tentatively.
'We are rebelling. Slowly at first, but soon all the people in this city who have mistreated us will see the error of their ways.' Alex's eyes were shining brightly, and he had a strange, faraway look.
'Ok, Ok. Who are we, and what are we doing? And why are there so many, you know, abnormalities here?' she lowered her voice.
'The people that live in that house are my friends, the resistance, a group of people who never fitted in. But there, they do. They can leave whenever they want but they don't want to. We help others like ourselves, we save those who need saving. And we never, ever turn our backs on our own.'
'If only you'd lived by that rule earlier,' Sophie whispered as she turned away. Just as he was about to reply, a large, bright explosion echoed around the town. It was the house, and it was no longer there. Alex and Sophie decided to make a run for it, but as they rounded the corner, they bumped into a woman with large, feathery wings.
